How to Read a Heat Sheet
A heat sheet is the schedule for a swim meet. It lists each event, the heats within each event, and the lane assignments for each swimmer.
Understanding how swim meets are organized makes reading a heat sheet much easier. A meet is organized into sessions, events, heats, and lanes.
How Swim Meets Are Organized
1. Sessions
A swim meet is divided into sessions. A session is a grouping of swimmers who compete during the same portion of the meet.
Sessions are often organized by age group. For example, a meet may have a 12 & Under session and a 13 & Over session.
Each session has its own warm-up time, start time, and schedule of events.
2. Events
Within each session, swimmers compete in individual events.
An event identifies the:
- Gender
- Age group
- Distance
- Stroke
Example: Girls 11–12 50 Freestyle
3. Seeding
Before the meet, swimmers are entered into events with a seed time.
A seed time is the swimmer's previously recorded time for that event. Swimmers are organized based on their entry times so that swimmers with similar speeds compete together.
You may see NT listed as a seed time. NT means "No Time". This means the swimmer does not have a previous recorded time for that event.
4. Heats
When many swimmers enter the same event, swimmers are divided into heats.
A heat is one group of swimmers racing at the same time.
The number of swimmers in a heat depends on the number of lanes:
- 8-lane pool = usually 8 swimmers per heat
- 10-lane pool = usually 10 swimmers per heat
Heats are generally swum from slowest to fastest. This means the fastest swimmers are usually placed in the final heat.
5. Lanes
Each swimmer is assigned a lane within their heat.
The lane tells the swimmer where they will start their race.
Example: Heat 3, Lane 5
This means the swimmer will race in the third group of swimmers and start from lane 5.
Reading a Heat Sheet
A heat sheet brings all of this information together. It shows:
- Event number and description
- Heat number
- Lane assignment
- Swimmer name
- Seed time
Find your swimmer's name, then note their event, heat, and lane so they know when and where they will race.

Finding Heat and Lane Information
Heat sheets are usually posted on the host club's website before the meet. Families can download or view the heat sheet to find their swimmer's events, heats, and lane assignments.
Many meets also have printed heat sheets available on deck for swimmers to reference throughout the session.
